got beanbag.

The generous Lee from sunny Florida and part of the Tips From The Top Floor's pixies sent me not one, but two beanbags. One standard big one, and one special custom made for my small JB1 camera. Gaspar here was in charge of the review:

There's a post with more detailed photos of mine and others' beanbags.

how did i fix my mp4 player screen

After the famous MP4 Digital Player review I had an accident with it. The glass screen broke on my pocket, probably due to pressure from the earphone themselves just on the right spot. Due to that, I used it with a beautiful grass-like set of lines crossing the display. I kept using it because A) it's easier than to do something about it, and B) there was a big risk of making things even worse. Well, that until the day one of the glass pieces that until then kept glued in place due to the sticker behind decided to be free. There was no turning back. I guess I could gave it to a repair shop or sth, probably a clock repairer, that are used to deal with thin glass of an exact measure, but I'm lazy to carry it there, I'm a cheap bastard, and I, above all, am a DIY person.

So let's take a look. After getting the screw off and sliding the metal cover, I took apart the plastic dark cover from the hardware itself. You can see the damaged glass still in position, from the front and from behind.

Notice the frame is in fact a black sticker with those funky letters, that is the glue between the glass and the plastic cover. Here's the player itself. You can see the actual size of the lcd screen is a big bigger than the window it had, and it's dark. That's good.

Now starts the tricky part. My solution was to use the plastic fake cds that came on top and below bulks of CD-R's, to avoid the real disc to get scratched. It happens the size of the missing protective glass screen fitted perfectly on the radius of the disc. Check it out:

There you can see the plastic disc and the finished result. I cut the disc with a common paper cutter. It marks the limits of the soon-to-be screen and then you have to do the final step by pressure, bending the sides until they crack, amazing thing they usually crack as they should, after the deep lines have been done with the cutter. Then you'll probably want to polish the edges and corners so they fit exactly on your player's cover. I made it right on the second try. The hardes part was to make it stay in place, since the original black sticker was too damaged from the previous use. My first try was with super glue and some stuff like that. Bad idea, on the fake CD plastic it turns white, and looked horrible. I got to clean it afterwards with nail polish remover. My next (succesful) try was with dual side thin transparent tape. I cut the proper pieces and sticked on the plastic cover, took the sheet off, and pressed the new screen on its place. Here's the finished result:

One obvious bad thing to note is that plastic scratches much more than glass. One good thing is that it doesn't have the funky colors MP4/WMA/WAV PLAYBACK text anymore, and the screen seems bigger (specially when turned off). Above all, now the lcd below is protected again.

Colibri dark skin Tordo

Remember the useful utility named Colibri I talked you about earlier? Well, finally I've made a proper dark skin for it, to my taste:

You can get it here, just decompress it on your Colibri's Themes folder. I named it after a common black southamerican bird. I think all Colibri's themes should be named after birds.
I also made a quick short video so you have an idea of how this useful thing works.

It's free, btw. I've also tried open source Launchy, which has some useful indexing features or ui stuff Colibri doesn't, but somehow it feels odd to me.
