how did i fix my mp4 player screen

After the famous MP4 Digital Player review I had an accident with it. The glass screen broke on my pocket, probably due to pressure from the earphone themselves just on the right spot. Due to that, I used it with a beautiful grass-like set of lines crossing the display. I kept using it because A) it's easier than to do something about it, and B) there was a big risk of making things even worse. Well, that until the day one of the glass pieces that until then kept glued in place due to the sticker behind decided to be free. There was no turning back. I guess I could gave it to a repair shop or sth, probably a clock repairer, that are used to deal with thin glass of an exact measure, but I'm lazy to carry it there, I'm a cheap bastard, and I, above all, am a DIY person.

So let's take a look. After getting the screw off and sliding the metal cover, I took apart the plastic dark cover from the hardware itself. You can see the damaged glass still in position, from the front and from behind.

Notice the frame is in fact a black sticker with those funky letters, that is the glue between the glass and the plastic cover. Here's the player itself. You can see the actual size of the lcd screen is a big bigger than the window it had, and it's dark. That's good.

Now starts the tricky part. My solution was to use the plastic fake cds that came on top and below bulks of CD-R's, to avoid the real disc to get scratched. It happens the size of the missing protective glass screen fitted perfectly on the radius of the disc. Check it out:

There you can see the plastic disc and the finished result. I cut the disc with a common paper cutter. It marks the limits of the soon-to-be screen and then you have to do the final step by pressure, bending the sides until they crack, amazing thing they usually crack as they should, after the deep lines have been done with the cutter. Then you'll probably want to polish the edges and corners so they fit exactly on your player's cover. I made it right on the second try. The hardes part was to make it stay in place, since the original black sticker was too damaged from the previous use. My first try was with super glue and some stuff like that. Bad idea, on the fake CD plastic it turns white, and looked horrible. I got to clean it afterwards with nail polish remover. My next (succesful) try was with dual side thin transparent tape. I cut the proper pieces and sticked on the plastic cover, took the sheet off, and pressed the new screen on its place. Here's the finished result:

One obvious bad thing to note is that plastic scratches much more than glass. One good thing is that it doesn't have the funky colors MP4/WMA/WAV PLAYBACK text anymore, and the screen seems bigger (specially when turned off). Above all, now the lcd below is protected again.

this is for Mahesh!
the problem is with your mp4 player's headphone jack.
theres a sensor inside jack which senses the headphones , so when u plug in the phones it trips off the loudspeakers.
solution is to replace the jack or
send me the pics of your mp4 player . then i can analyse the problem fully.

This is for d.mach88@yahoomail.com: Hi I am from India. I have bought JXD MP4 player. It does a great job including playing music, picures, recording small family clips, except one problem, the screen went bad that may be due to some mishandling. Though I can't see the picture/movie that I am recording the output is fine when i see it on TV. So the problem is with the Screen (not the outside screen), I shall be grateful if you could give me some idea about fixing the same, thanks in advance - Ravi Kumar

hey dear fellow from india, i wouldn't really know how to fix an lcd screen, or even if the cost of doing so is worth it. i suggest you check with a local electronics repair shop because if that model of lcd screen is pretty generic you might be lucky.

This was a great help, But when e-mailed Uxcell the company that I got my player from and told them that I broke the glass, and was looking to buy a new one, they sent me a new on for free!! How cool is that. I recomend this company to anyone that wants a new mp3 player, They really helped me out.

Hi, Anhdres

Thanks for a great and simple instructions. One thing is unclear. Did you glue the new plastic glass to the MP4 cover or you fixed it on it in some other way?

What did you use to cut the plastic accurately and nicely?

Thanks.

Blogger anhdres | 9/4/07 2:36 AM

at first i tried to glue it but the fast glue with the cheap plastc turned white when dried and lost transparency. i had to actually cut very small pieces of double sided tape to hold the thing in place.

i didn't cut the thing very nicely. i used a simple paper cutter to 'mark' the line and then carefully bend it until it cracked by that line. it took three attempts. then i polished the edges with a nail lime to get them smooth.

Isn't it great when we use our brain and our hands instead of using our wallet?

Whoo Andrés those are a lot of discussions on this one. People probably found this page by searching online after similar problems.

Very cool stuff =D genius idea with using the fake CDs!

It's a excellent idea, thank you for the tip.

Awesome, I did the exact same thing with my headphones in my pocket and was sweating out how to fix/get it fixed and I think this one is great. Not only will it be fixed, but the plastic will deffinitely be a lot stronger. Thanks

Blogger lomolon52 | 24/2/08 12:57 PM

ok now dat means i need ur help if you did this urself... my screen broke, NOW i MAY have been the cause of it considerin i fell when i was dancin (it was apart of the dance so don't laugh lol) and the screen like broke apparently, but i didn't notice until i got home... then days after that, there was suddenly an orange blob slowly making it was around da whole damn screen, and i kno because one day it was in da middle of my screen then got bigger then went to the bottom left side of it then later on went to the right so i need help realli, just like you, i'm too cheap to go to a repair shop, and i'm wonderin if i can do the same thing you did since i caused the problem (i just wanna replace it is all...)

Blogger anhdres | 24/2/08 2:54 PM

i would venture that you broke the screen itself, not the protective glass as i did. in that case, i'm sorry but i cannot help you.

what's more, considering the prices of these devices, it's probably cheaper to replace it i'm afraid.

good luck!
