MP4 Digital Player Review

I bought myself an mp3 player. Finally. It was going to be the fourth time than I almost bought one, but this was the definitive one. I had two important rules about the whole subject.
  1. It cannot be over the $100 USD.

  2. It should have at least 1GB of memory.

I was close. This one costed me $113.99 USD so I did a bit of cheating there, but I wasn't too comfident carrying around more than the equivalent to $350 ARS in my pocket all the time, and (as it was proved with my spycam) that is an important usage factor. So here it is:

Wow that almost looks like a nano. Yes, it does. It's exactly the same size. The only difference is the buttons, that aren't a smooth scroll like in the real nano, but only five simple buttons; and of course, the luxurious and simple apple UI. Apart from that, the thing is a chinese generic beauty.

You can see it doesn't have any kind of brand, not even one like TOPMARK or POWER or maybe EUROSTAR, nothing. It doesn't even say where it was made. The back is made of metal that loves fingerprints, just like the real one, and the front cover is black. The lcd screen is color, and 128x128 if I'm correct. It also has a very decent refresh rate.

Let's take a look at the features:
  • MUSIC It plays MP3s, both CBR and VBR, as well as WMA and WAV. Sorry, no OGG here (I was surprised, considering it's from the eastern hemisphere) so I guess i'm back to Lame encoding. That was a shame. The audio quality is pretty good, and the volume is enough (more than safe anyways) it has some interference which you can notice at very low volume settings and without external noise, coming from the player itself. I guess the quality of the components and the shielding of each connection must have to do with that.
  • RECORD & VOICE It records wav at 32kbps and also a compressed strange codec that can be restored with included software, for extra duretion. The quality is not good, of course, it has an embedded mic and a automatic gain that is very strong, which makes it very good for recording a lecture but absolutely useless for a concert. In VOICE you can browse and listen to your recordings.
  • FM RADIO Yes it has a radio included, and it's internal, uses the headphones as antenna too, and the quality is very very good. Has 20 memories for stations and an autoscan with customizable threshold. Nice and useful.
  • TEXT for viewing of simpe TXT files.
  • PICTURE You can see JPGs and GIFs here, browse by folder, etc.
  • PHONE BOOK Haven't and probably won't use this at all, you have to manually edit the info on the computer on a special format. It's also too risky to have that info unencrypted on an easy-to-stole item such as that. A cellphone is easy enough.
  • GAME Three games to choose from, a Tetris clone named Bricks, one also known called BoxMan, and another called Color Bead. Nice feature for bus trips.
  • MOVIE It plays movie clips with sound encoded in AMV format
  • . It's an obscure chinese format but there's am encoder available on the net all over the place, and works. It's obviously not the main use of the gadget, but it's a fun feature that I've used quite a bit to show short clips taken with the spycam and does the job. The compression is quite good too (should be considering it's a 128x128 video) so putting an entire TV episode or even a feature film there is not a problem.
  • SETTINGS You can configure LCD brightness, auto power off, clock, encrypted volume, language, and see memory and firmware info.

So that's pretty much it. The thing has a flash memory of 1GB, which is enough for me so far, an internal battery (which was against my first desires, but then liked it) that lasts for about 5 hours or so of playback, and charges to 100% in about 3, or to 80% in 2 hours aprox. Good enough. It connects through standard USB cable, and charges through that too. It comes with a handy AC adaptor to charge it without the computer, and that was a blessing too.

Oh, it's recognized as a generic external drive by Windows so you can do all the USB stick things you wish, like putting a TorPark there, or maybe MyPodder (very useful). I'll explain any of this further is someone asks me to, but I think this is long enough as it is for now. I've also found an useful forum of user of these kind of players where you can ask for advice or help or find several utilities, test files, etc. They look all different but have the same chipset and similar firmware inside!

UPDATE 1: David found a pdf manual for these kind of generic players, there are usually small differences between models but those are mainly on the graphics. Thanks David!

UPDATE 2: My glass protective screen broke and I fixed it DIY style. Check my post for the whole story, step by step.

UPDATE 3: Due to great demand, I've uploaded my dump.bin file extracted which should be my firmware backup. You can get it at http://www.megaupload.com/?d=H0Y19W9P or http://www.filefactory.com/file/c8c093/
No need to say I don't encourage people to go and change their firmwares, and even in a desperate situation it's more likely mine won't work in yours, but maybe, maybe it helps someone that already knows how to reset and flash it in case of need.

looks pretty fun! i've been wanting to buy an mp3 player for a while now, something like this that does all that looks even better, though.

where'd you buy it?

Blogger anhdres | 28/5/06 3:08 PM

i bought it through MercadoLibre, which is a kind of latin american eBay. so i'm sure you can find several options there too.

Just got one of these while visiting Shenzhen China. Cost wass 450 RMB for the new 8GB model. That's about $56 US. Good deal.

Anonymous Anonymous | 14/7/06 12:22 AM

just bought one exactly like that on ebay. havent gotten it yet but the only difference is that it has 4 gigs and only cost 75.00 us dollars. not a bad little toy ;-)

Anonymous Anonymous | 29/7/06 2:57 AM

is it possable to change that little harddrive to something else bigger?

Blogger anhdres | 29/7/06 3:05 AM

i guess it would technically be possible, but i don't think it's worth the effort and cost!

Anonymous Anonymous | 1/8/06 8:28 PM

Hello, i have a player like yours, but 4 gb.
When i plug to pc and try to acess it, the system say it is not formmatted and ask to format.
I read i should not format, because i can losse space memory.
What do you suggest me to do?

Thanks.

david.

Blogger anhdres | 1/8/06 8:35 PM

the only thing i can think of now is to put your player on the mass storage mode only, and disable the encrypted volume. you can probably do that on the player's configuration menu.

Anonymous Anonymous | 3/8/06 6:16 PM

Hello, anhdres,

Your suggest were really perfect. I choose mass storage mode and the device is working now.

Really thanks.

When it is in use the display is always on, and consume much more energy. Do you know a way to save more energy in this device?

I really thank you for your last help.

David.

Blogger anhdres | 3/8/06 7:20 PM

david, also in the configuration menu there's a setting (on mine at least) called "power off" and another called "sleep" you can set a parameter in sleep of say, 30 seconds, so that 30" after you stop hitting any key the lcd turns off. it turns on again by pressing any key.

Anonymous Anonymous | 4/8/06 2:34 PM

I just read a review on Ebay about these things not having the capacity they say they do. The article recommended reformatting and finding the actual capacity, not the reported capacity.

Blogger anhdres | 4/8/06 2:49 PM

i suppose that's something that can happen when you buy some gadget that doesn't even have a brand! hehe, lucky me, mine says and is 1gb.

Anonymous Anonymous | 11/8/06 12:34 PM

Hi. I've bought 3 players that look very similar, though may be smaller as referred to as 'mini'. They are great little MP3 players (the first I've ever had) but I have a problem with the games (I know they're not great but the kids will like them). The 'down' key which is actually the 'vol' key doesn't do anything in the games!!! Any ideas? I asked the same question in a forum on mympxplayer but site doesn't seem to be working anymore. Thanks

Blogger anhdres | 11/8/06 12:55 PM

i wouldn't know, really. on mine the VOL key works as the down key as expected. perhaps you might try to do a firmware update or sth, but i wouldn't recommend it unless it's really important, and i wouldn't know how to do it.

Anonymous Anonymous | 12/8/06 11:18 AM

Can someone explain me why my mp4 is not charging , i left 2 days in the row and still can not turn on.?

Anonymous Lester | 15/8/06 11:32 AM

Sirs,

I bought a 4gb MP4 player, very similar to ipod one.

As I synchronize it with my pc and download folders, my windows explorer shows it has done it successfully and I can see the new folders/files inside. (it shows 4gb of space)

But when I turn the mp4 on, go to the local folder, I cannot see any of the files I´ve downloaded.

Its strange, because I first downloaded some mp3 files/folders and it worked ok. After this time, I tryed to download other ones and this thing happens !

There are some folders I downloaded that I can see thru windows explorer, but inside of it, in spite of music, there are many folders with strange characters that cannot be erased. Its "eating" memory but without working !! And more...I erased other files but the memory free space did not change anything !!!

One more problem, to finish here....Sometimes I plug the usb cable and it synchronizes correctly...others no...I have to reboot the pc in order to do it...

What should I do? Do you know what is the problem with it?

Its firmware is: B204G2V1 from 2006/06/20.

Thank you, hope you can help !

Blogger anhdres | 15/8/06 1:34 PM

hey lester and others, i wouldn't really know, i'm just a user like yourself. searching i found two useful links, the article on wikipedia with more info and links about mp4 players and another forum with info and firmware downloads and instructions.
your specific problem seems to come from a defective unit, unless there's some silly small detail we are not taking into account, like incompatible unicode on the filenames or similar.

i think they have a 99 songs limit per folder. just create subfolders based on artist, or style, and that's probably it.

Anonymous Anonymous | 21/8/06 5:21 AM

Hi, this may sound pretty lame, but I've just bought new mp4 player. I downloaded several music folders onto it and then I wanted to browse them. But what a surprise. No matter what I do, I cannot enter the sub folder, I have to press forward/backward to manualy go over all the songs trough the subfolders one-by-one. This is pretty boring, what's the problem? I really don't understand :-/

Blogger anhdres | 21/8/06 3:18 PM

using the menu, star browing from "local folder" and up, when you find the folder you want to listen to, don't enter it, just hit the play button. that will place you straight into that folder ready for playback. note that from within that folder you don't have other method than manually skipping song to reach your desired one.

mmm i wouldn't know, really. mine shows them ok, although the resizing is pretty bad and pixelated.

Anonymous Anonymous | 23/8/06 8:52 PM

Anhdres, I wish everybody would take this efford to help other people..... GREAT !!
I just bought mine, an 4 gb and it seems to be working perfectly, no problems at all. And the sound quality is imo superb! You shouldn't expect too much of the 1,5 inch display in video mode but thats okay since I bought it especialy for the music mode and fm-receiver.
So it's a great apparatus. the only complaint I have is that when surfing trough the menu's or changing any settings, looking though the music-maps, is that it takes a lot of time, you have to be very patient. It will enter the desired map or anything but it take some time.... I now learned to be patient.... I guess it's because the memory is fairly big to go trough for the player.
Again: thanks for putting up so much information !

i bought a mp4 player nano like

how do i convert avi to amv
please help thanks

Anonymous Anonymous | 26/8/06 3:29 AM

Hi guys,

Seems to be popular. Just got my 4Gb player and have been playing with it quite a bit, and finally found the tip to sort out my problem in relation to copying the file i.e. switch off encryption, but I'm still discovering an awfull lot of bugs in the os i.e. reboots when I try to access recorder, when I play a song and press the vol button down and it changes some option i.e. B, then a-b but then reboots, and that's just a few of the ones I have discovered.

Also someone mentioned having problems having to go through every file and the solution was to use folders. That's not the case for me, I have to go through each individual files which is an absolute killer, if you end up having 500+ songs on it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Great blog btw!

Blogger anhdres | 28/8/06 1:21 AM

i think you have to put an equally named file as the mp3, but with .lrc extensions that contains the lyrics. i don't know where do youget them either. mine came with just one demo.

Anonymous Anonymous | 29/8/06 8:49 PM

Hello everyone,
I've got also an 4 gB player like this. And i have a few questions for you guys ( and/or gals).

I also found out that it has some bugs in. Sometimes the wrong song starts to play after entering a song by the folders. The random play isn't realy random. The player seems to have its own favorite songs...
Also when i made some folder the way i want them but the player turns them back automaticly when connected to the computer! It makes his own folders and if you change this he will make it undone later! This happens in a rather slow pace, you can actually follow the procedure on your computer! slowly the maps are beeing re-made.
But ok perhaps you shouldn't expect too much of a player with a price-tag like this.

But a real problem for me is that it is virtually impossible to select songs from folders, that is, it works but it takes so much time that it's not done. It takes about 30 seconds to select a song from a folder. Question: is this normal?
Is there any way to upgrade the player by program a new software-version and if so, how ?

Blogger anhdres | 29/8/06 11:00 PM

i don't think a newer firmware will make the player faster. there's also a big risk associated with flashing and upgrading, i don't think it's worth it.

Anonymous Anonymous | 30/8/06 10:23 AM

Hello everyone,
I've got also an 4 gB player like the photographs (model: SC85051F). but I can´t use the voice recorder, because when I choose this option, the mp4 resets. And my PC (Win XP SP2) detects the mp4, but appears a message ''you need to format, do you want to do it?''.

Are these problems because of the firmware??? where can I download them??

THANKS!!!

I would like to make a comment about the memory in some mp3-players from China.

I've had an experience with a 4GB player which turned out to be a 2GB!
On the player the memory was vissible as a 4GB and even in Windows XP. But after formatting the real memory size was 2GB.
I looked inside the player and searched on the internet for the code mentioned on the memorychip. It was a 2GB memory!
I bought it on ebay.
People, be aware!!!

How do i put in video's????????

Anonymous Silverfang24-7 | 2/9/06 12:25 PM

Hey,
after one day of searching I finally found this great page to download the (broken) software that comes with the mp4 player.
the program, mp3 player utilities 3.57 which is actually on the miniCD delivered with the mp4 has a defect MSI.CAB file in it.

so here is the same program but working :)
http://zupload.com/download.php?file=getfile&filepath=27046

it works fine and because it's the same program that originally comes with the player it assures max compatibility :)

so about my player:
It's a 2GB "ipod nano" at least that's the fake brand they put on it :P

It has a little crack in the screen but that's only seen from certain angles so it doesn't really bother me.

I formatted it using FAT filesystem after I had the disk crashed when putting over 1GB in files on it.
now it still says the size is 2GB but I wont add more then 1GB in data this time :P

Apart from the TERRIBLY SLOW songsearching I have no complaints about the thing....

ohw and before I forget the only page I found containing as much info as this can be found here:

http://www.mediacollege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1312
other useful threads in there as well just browse around a bit.

ohw and 1 last addition:
If anyone bought (or is buying) this thing for the videos, I feel sorry for you, because it's really no use on such a small screen :(

well that's about all :P

I might look back here if I need some more info later on or if I have solutions to some of these annoying problems.

regards,
Silverfang24-7

Hi - I also purchased the 4bg ipod lookalike and have had nothing but problems with it; but as you say, what can you expect for £40 on ebay. I experienced problems with songs not playing, not deleting etc etc so I formatted the drive using FAT32 on windows explorer. This meant I could delete everything and start again - All is now fine!
Hope this helpd

Hi everyone!
Few days ago I bought MP4 player 2 GB SC85051F on ebay and I have similar problem as Silverfang24-7. I can't put over 1GB. I formatted it a few times (using both FAT or FAT 32) but it didn't help :( What is also annoying is that when I choose Music I can't go to Voice Recorder or any other mode, unless I turn off the player. Does anyone have solution to that?

Anonymous Nanite | 9/9/06 2:40 PM

I bought one of these 4GB nano lookalikes and can only get one movie to work. Trying different versions of the software to see if that makes a difference. It is slow, sound is a bit tinny. But, hey, it was £40. Its a decent stopgap until you can raise the money for an iPod (£200). Has anyone else experienced the movie problem? I will check back on here as I think this is a good site for info.

Got a site for the software, including a .mtv converter that seems to work....I havn't tested it fully yet though.

the video on mine is still kind of an issue. i use the amv converter app and it works fine, but once int he player the video doesn't play as smooth as desired, which makes a weird annoyence on the audio, specially. i've tried with many cominations of resolution, frames per second, and audio, but it doesn't make any difference.

anhdres, I will keep trying at the settings myself and let you know. It would be good to find an optimimum somewhere. Meanwhile, the first movie I encoded as a .mtv file seems to play ok. Have to play around with encoding settings to see if I can get a good result.

some people have problems with selecting musicfolders. I had the same problem. It was possible to select a folder, but every time the same old folder was starting. I found out that the repeat option was set to repeat folder. I changed it in normal and now everything works fine.
I hope this is usefull for other people."

This guy/gal is my hero, thanks a lot it was getting so fustrating that it wouldn't open the other folders; now it does! :o)

Now to chase up the ebay seller as we bought a 4gb and it's only got 2gb of space....

Anonymous Anonymous | 10/9/06 12:44 AM

I have just brought one. It all works really well except i cannot set it to random play.
I went through and changed it to random under "tempo" or something, but that makes no difference - and I cant find any where else on the settings to change it to play randomly.
Any ideas?

If you have the lenguage in Chinese:
first Turn on the player, in this moment the fist screen is Music, so get back one menu with the left arrow, so you are in SYS Setup, click menu, here appear the submenus, first submenu is Clock, second is LCD set & third is Lenguage, here, click MENU button, and then appear the lenguage, you must use the second option (English)

I got duped on ebay with a 2gb advertised as 4gb. I also killed my player but recovered it.

If you have saved a dump file of your firmware, and you cant get the pc to recognize the usb device, restart the computer then turn mp3 player on, with usb in. Press all buttons a few times. As soon as it was recognized, I uploaded the old firmware and it was fixed.

Hi
I also bought a 2GB player in Hongkong which has the same style then the Ipod nano. At first it looks fine but when I want to store more then 99 files on the player, I got problems. To fix the problem, I created folders with max. 99 files.
But I can't see the folders on the player, additional the folders have been copied into themself.
It's not possible to play a file which has been copied to the player from the PC (unkown file format).

Now I want to update the firmware but I have the fear that if it's not working, I can't use the player anymore. Is there a way to upload the installed firmware from the player to the PC?
Which firmware should be used?
How importent is it to know the chip no. and the chip board no.?
Where i can find them?

It would be fine if anyone can answer at least one of all my questions.
Thank you in advance
W

I have been able to download music without too many problems using Windows Media Player. However I want random song selection. Windows or the MP4 insists !! on putting songs ripped from one CD together. Random then justs re-orders the songs within a folder not all of the songs.
Any suggestions ?

Anonymous Anonymous | 20/9/06 8:27 PM

Hi,
I'm not as positive anymore as i was when i just got the player (4 Gb)

First: If you are just looking for a decent mp3 player.... save some extra money and buy a real i-pod!

It is just not working the way it should. It takes too long to select songs, if you are able to select at all..
The video mode is realy wurthless, the quality is very poor and hardly recognisable on the small screen and the audio is distorted... not realy usable.

In mp3 mode (music) It is too anoying to browse from folder to folder and select files becouse it take too much time, it's far to slow to use it as a usefull mp3 player.
Random play is actualy not random at all it picks out the same songs over and over again.

battery is down fast. Within 1 hour the player go's down and shuts off.

to cut a long story short: It's a nice try to copy the I-pod but it isn't one....

It probably has a reason why the real i-pod's are more expensive!

I mean: why is everyone here wondering if they can put the latest firmware on their player? You should not have a reason to do so !! It should be working fine, unfortunaly it appears it doesn't...

I rest my case..........

Conclusion: Nice for a day or two but then you start to get frustrated for it doesn't do what you want...

Earphones - you can get an adapter from 2.5mm to 3.5mm. I have one and it works fine. The earphones I got with my player were tinny and rubbish. The ones I use now give a really good bass response. Have a look on ebay or on the Web for an adapter.

Very interesting reading :)
FWIW - We are a company selling Mp4 players on the Chinese mainland.
- There is no reliable flash memory available bigger than 2GB at this time. Buy greater than that and it's 99.999% that it's FAKE.
- The honest factories produce very reliable little players - well worth the money.
- As well as the 99 file limit per folder, you WILL NOT SEE sub-folders unless there's at least one file in the parent folder.
- The guy that got a 4GB player for 120RMB will find it's a (well-disguised)128meg chip.
- Many of the problems reported in these comments are because the player is config'd to show (initially) more memory than what you think you purchased.
- If you pay under 60$US incl. post, pkg, insurance etc., etc., for a 1GB MP4 Player on ebay to UK, Aus., USA, it's likely to be from an unregistered factory using reject/fake chips.

I have an mp3 player SC85051F 2006/04/25 ACT_V3.5.35.

When I synchronize music from certain media programs (like Windows Media Player and Yahoo Jukebox), the software will say the device synchronization is complete, but when I turn my mp3 player on and go to Music, it says No Files!

Yesterday, I was able to put one song on there, but after I tried going to Windows to copy and paste music folders onto it, it doesn't show up.

Please help!

Thanks for publishing this site. I'm afraid that I have another bogus unit. I recently bought what was advertized as a 4GB mp4 player. (eBay ~$75 US) Same appearance as the pictures on this site. When I transferred more than 2GB onto the unit, my files would be corrupted. I fear that I actually have a 2GB unit. The nasty issue is that it was apparently designed to be a 4GB unit. That is what windows identifies it as. After one file is corrupted, no other file transaction will work unless I reformat the drive. It is a shame. I was hoping to buy them for my children for christmas presents. After hearing all the negative issues, especially an 8GB unit with only 128MB of memory, I won't. I would have paid the same for a legitamate 2GB unit. It is still much cheaper than a 2GB Ipod Nano. A legitamate 2GB unit would tell me when it is full instead of re-writing old memory and corrupting the disk. The only reliable way for me to transfer files is to format, then transfer < 2GB. There are just too many issues to purchase another one.

ok - here's a reputable Chinese site with some models to use as reference.

The players are reliable/genuine, and the prices will indicate to you the minimum you should be paying on ebay.
Pay less, and buy more than 2
